I completely really understand what you’re saying about changing the story so kids can understand and be satisfied.. I mean, if you play the Burning Earth game, they never really show us the Dai Li’s brainwashing, the hypocrisy that is Ba Sing Se, or the fact that Jet dies. In fact, they give you a lot of hope that Jet will be healed and survive his injury from Long Feng. Unlike in the show, where it’s confirmed that he died.
XD And um, guys, Z is Farah’s boyfriend…

I couldn’t agree with Monika even more than I already do. I really hope that it is true, like you have no idea. If it is the way you theorized about it, I would be so happy like there was no tomorrow.
Also the fact that the book is an ADAPTATION aimed at 6-10 year old kids, makes a lot of sense as to why so many elements of the finale are omitted and as to why they would end it with Kataang. A Kataang so lame, with no build up, no epicness, and so blah, fits in a children’s book.
BTW when Greenifyme read the Aang POV parts from the book, I dies LMAOing on front of my mac, lol.
“Twilight,” a that stupid series that I want to burn so badly. I know a lot of people love it, but seriously, I hated it and I hated the characters even more. Bella is a bitch/damsel in distress/a man’s bitch/and just plain annoying, while Edward is a perfect blah! And there is no build up to their relationship that makes it good, it just happens and he ends up pushing her around and saving her all the effing time. Ultimately they are such unrealistic characters, and I consider Bella to be a Mary Sue of the author’s own idealized self-image. Overall, the worst popular crap I have read lately and it is a shame since I love novels based on vampires.
In conclusion, thank you for this amazing podcast. It gave me a lot of hope. Keep up the good work girls!
Also I noticed that at the very end you guys mentioned my fanart but I couldn’t hear what you guys thought of it because a song started to play really loud.

OMG, you have no idea how much I love this theory, I mean, that’s a PERFECTED version of the one me and AVidZktjo have been discussing for days now! Squee! You’ve got it so down to a T. It makes total sense, and that epicness that is Zuko saving KAtara…Aaah….*melts*
ONE thing I didn’t like though, didn’t have to do with the theory, because I adore it and I’m placing my Zutarian hope and faith in it…You guys tended to talk over each other a ton in this one…Especially Z-mann and even druing the theory…That was kind of annoying, actually…^^; I mean, no offense meant to Z, he’s a fun guy…just…I really wanted to hear all that the girls had to say…and then the song at the end starting up while the girls were still pimping fanwork. Just Fyi and future podcasts.
Anyway, LOVED it beyond words, I’m eager for July to come so we can see this epicness that isn’t Kataang…but ZUTARA! Woo!

The theory was interesting, I guess I’m 50/50 on this. And to echo other comments, Z’s talking over everyone was really annoying, but since he’s a kataanger and most of them are annoying already I guess I can’t hold it against him!

At first i thought there was a bit too of you guys talking over one another and then when It got near the end and it felt like things were ommitted I finally caught on that it muct actually be the audio itself. Sorry Z, I cursed you out a couple of times while listenning.

Monika for the win! That was a very well thought out theory and I really hope it’s true, because it does make a lot of sense.
Oh and Z? About no “dark romances” selling? There are plenty of Vampire Romance novels out there selling like hotcakes, not just Twilight though that’s extremely popular right now. And that’s Young Adult so imagine the ones targeted at an older audiance? Hell, there are tons of Urban Fanatasy novels with romantic subplots that are “dark and intruiging”!
The Rachel Morgan Series - Kim Harrison (romantic subplots. TWO of them, and their BOTH dark) The Darkyn Series - Lynn Viehl (I think her “Stardoc” series has a romance that’s kind of dark and intruiging, though that’s science fiction) The Rose of Shanhasson- Joely Sue Burkhart (not an urban fantasy but it is fantasy) Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen (;) Though I think I heard Monika say it) Romeo and Juliet- Shakespeare!!
I could go and on really…I could even add in some Animes and Movies.

MzSweet…. I have to say, I hope you are right, but I think you give Bryke too much credit. And if this book is an alternate ending to the finale why was it not billed as such? Its not like it says it on the book. If its purpose was to provide those who liked kataang with a kataang ending, how would the kataangers know that to buy it in the first place?
Also, if you are right about how its being aimed at kids meant that it was for the kids who are confused by the zutara in the finale, won’t they be MORE confused if the when the events in the book don’t match up with the events in the finale?
And would nick/bryke really bank on kids reading now-a-days anyway? (ok that last one was a bit flippant and not a serious question from me.)
I think Bryke may have just been mediocre and nonsenscical with their finale and thats that. :/
The reasoning behind why we don’t see any more about Ursa in the book does make sense, so kudos on that. Though if she is alive, why not mention her being there at some point in a real physical way? Could be plot issues like you mentioned. Could also be space limits on the book. lol *shrugs* but yeah, good point about it.
Ok, Zmann just interrupted Mon for the third time and, frankly, I am kinda wishing you guys hadn’t had him on tonight. Really not the podcast to have him.
Emotional balance was necessary for lightning generation not lightning redirection. I mean, if Zuko gets hurt, obviously there is some kind of distraction involved b/c he has redirected unexpected lightning before(ozai) without any problem. I am just saying that Iroh told zuko he needed balance/no turmoil in himself for lightning bending not redirection.
The Oma and Shu parallel, I saw too and that was so awesome that you mentioned that! ^^ Katara went Oma on Azula’s sorry rear end when her Shu was injured.
See? This is why I say Bryke has gone mediocre. They put all this Zutara in the finale, all this potential, and then they screw it up and choke at the end.
I hope you are right and they don’t. The epilogue chapter did seem out of no where and like it was tacked on at the end, like it could easily be removed or added at the writer’s convienance. It had no connection to the previous chapters, really. But… that interview answer… so I still sadly think you are giving them too much credit.
Same thing with the avatar state stuff. It IS stupid that the AS seems to come around for no reason w/e. But… Bryke may just have been stupid.
And the running theme in yoru theory about kids looking to their moms and seeing katara as aang’s mom figure… I mean, don’t misunderstand me. Katara totally IS aang’s mom figure–
Ok, Zmann just yawned thru Mon’s last bit of theory and he is officially annoying me now. Again, *wrong* cast to have him on if this is how he’ll be.
Continuing, she is his mom figure, but will kids see that? And if they do, won’t it confuse the crap out of them when they see the epilogue chapter that describes her kissing him and that (disturbingly) passionate picture of their kiss if this is the case?
For the record, as a little kid, I understood enemies turned lovers. Or more that bickering ppl were gonna end up together. I think they did that in disney movies? i can’t recall a specific example, but I do know I understood it way back when. I’d take a bet and say you did too, MzSweet. Not saying all kids are like that ofc. I just… wanted it known I guess. :/ Yeah… er, nevermind. XD
Right on about Autn Wu’s prediction and the lack of the epic with kataang– OK, fourth interruption and again Zmann needs to learn to shut up. We barely ever hear Mon in these casts at all due to her mic issues recently and then now we get to hear her and he keeps interrupting. And Zutara cast, man, on which you were a guest. For future reference, guest= not interrupting in the middle of the theory. Or being condescending to the audience. >:(
And we have never had a prediction about Zuko’s future, so, considering the nature of Aunt Wu’s predictions, she probably would have seen his romance in his future. Aang she saw nothing. She is always right, though maybe not in the way we see it coming.
Which brings me back to the prediction. This would be the first show/book/story in history where the prediction would have been interpretted by a character right the first time. So, it shouldn’t happen how aang believes it will.
And I think, at about 50:00 onward, there was a part of the convo we couldn’t hear cus you guys kept responding to something we couldn’t hear.
lol “Aang I am sorry for rebuffing you this entire show. T_T” XDD That was funny, zmann. Props.
OK now Zmann keeps talking over you guys and neither side stops when this happens… taking into account that we still couldn’t hear a lot of this cast after the 50 minute mark, is this some kind of tech difficulty where Zmann couldn’t hear you guys? O.o
Well, anyway, I am with erica and I am gonna not dare to get my hopes up… too high. Though, Mon, in a perfect world you would be comepletely spot on right. And *maybe* this will be a little bit of perfection on earth, but, mainly b/c of that interview, I am not holding my breath. :/
Interesting podcast, though. Thought provoking.

The way Aang was supposed to change over the course of the show WAS growing up. He’s finally managed that by giving up Katara. Zuko’s change was much different; his was a complete flip from evil to good. Ahh, i don’t want to Argue with Z T_T

I couldn’t even finish it. the tech. difficulties were driving me insane. i love listening but i was getting frustrated :[ find a solution for volume control and timing for the next podcast, please. (seriously? you had the song running while you were still talking? i wanted to listen to you guys, really, but it’s impossible)
The arguments were good on both sides from what i could gather, but it needs to be better quality. i left a comment earlier. it didn’t show up :[
basically I said that I think the creators are the kind of writers who give people what they want. they gave kataang an ending. they will give zutara an ending. That and the finale may be rated for older audiences so this book may serve as the only ending the little people get.
Everything in any nickelodeon books are dumbed down. i used to read them when i was eight or so and thought they were idiotic. they were targeted towards kids who don’t challenge authority and traditional thought yet (6-10) it makes sense that they would have less surprising things in the book than in the finale itself. kataangers tend to be unoriginal(sorry Z). i have a resident kataanger at my school. my zutarian friends are all artists and she is one of those “stick to the rules” overachiever types xD

I can’t believe how quickly you got this all down, Mon. It makes a lot of sense, I like it! Playing it safe, but I definitely love the series. I really have to see the finale for myself. I can’t throw everything out based on a condensed version of a four-episode finale. The show has come this far and done so well, I want to say they won’t just throw it all out like that. Seriously, shipping aside, that just sucked -_-

k, i would like to belive that mizsweets thing is right, but i dont want to get any hopes up. Even before i heard her theory i was already back on my feat. (not that it wasn’t great, it was increadily thought out, i just dont want to get my hopes up ) Oh and btw, for your bet, are you alowed to where a seater over the shirt ? ,… loophole ? AND ZMAN , katara is not a skank, i dunno if you were kidding or not ( were you kiding , i dunno, ) I think that kataang has a probability of not happening, even after a [random] kiss. lmao You guys sound like me and my boyfriend. Most of these theories I’ve already spouted off to him and he always has a counter about why he knows Kataang will happen. He’s actually a Zutara shipper, but he, like most after this book, has accepted it won’t happen. I haven’t and I won’t. I really wish I had more Avatard friends to talk to and debate with..

I’m sorry but I have to disagree. Z in my opinion was rude (has nothing to do with the overlapping audio glitch) Calling Katara a slut, yawning (rather loudly I might add) and announcing that he fell asleep, etc. I didn’t find it funny. I only learned of you all (and the podcast) two weeks ago from CapsZutara. I think I’m going to stick to the livejournal Zutara com and not the Devart one, sorry but not all Zutarians have to forgive him just because he’s your friend. e_e

… Dayamn… this is the most comments you’ve ever had on any post… Can I say the Zmann-bump? (almost as good as Colbert’s lol) XD
Yeah, audio problems were only int he recording… See over Skype there’s approximately a 10ms to half a second lag between voices… Erica was hosting that so all our voices had to go to her, then back out to the other 2. Adding more delay, (but barely) so I heard their voices about half a second to a second after they said it. Now Pamela, the call recorder, does not record as it comes in, it has an even bigger delay (not to diss Pamela, I’m bound a rep or dev woudl coem in and try and pwn me with my luck XD) In conference calls, because it’s attempting to catch so many channels coming in at different times (mine is immediate, erica’s comes in 2nd and farah and monica 3rd) it gets a little overwhelmed with the sampling rate and kinda skewes the voices by a few seconds, milliseconds, whatever…
Forgive me for kinda “booming” over the others, another problem with having the “source” mic when recording. A tech difficulty that wont happen again, I assure you, skype host will record form now on so it should be fine (plus I’m not planning on offesting all these fangirl altos with my deep bass again anytime soon) I just hope you all enjoyed Mon’s theory and some playful Z-K banter…
(and ohh yes, Katara being a skank was a joke, lol almost everything I say is in a jesting manner, especially over something meaningless like shipping XD, no offense to anyone, including Katara…hehe)

Great podcast guys
. As usual. The technical difficulties were a little distracting but, it was still a good listen overall.
Mizsweet’s theory made sense but, I’m going to also take the safe route because I really don’t want to be upset or sad if I see the end and am gravely disappointed by it. Mizsweet’s theories are always very thought provoking and stir up a lot of thoughts/questions that people should have more often. From what I’ve read from the finale and what you all read in the podcast…it sounds extremely lack lustre and I just hope that’s not the case.
To add fuel to the fire however, even if I personally believe that what’s in Sozin’s comet will be true, the kind of explanation that Mizsweet was talking about, strangely happened to the 1980s film Pretty in Pink. The book that was to accompany the movie ended differently and was released earlier too. The book’s ending could not be changed in time (by then the book was already published and ready to be sold) because John Hughes (the director) was pressured into changing the movie ending by the fans and the studio, right before they ended filming. Ironically enough, the movie’s “Katara” character (Andie) cited that she felt that she had a “brotherly” connection to her “Aang” (Duckie) and didn’t have the chemistry to carry on a relationship that made sense.
I am really not saying that this is will be the case of Avatar but…if people want to put faith in that kind of happening, then there’s your little slice of hope for the day

Oh And Memorial do Convento has a relationship between Baltasar and Blimund that is a lot like Zutara. They complement each other although they are completly different. He is warrior that came from the war, got his hand cut off, he killed to survive while Blimunda is a passionate, kind forgiving woman that is still pure. She has this amazing power to collect people’s wills while her stomach is empty. And they fall helplessly in love. José Saramago even gives meaning to their names Being him Baltasar Sete Sóis (or Baltasar Seven Suns) and she is Blimunda Sete Luas (or Blimunda Seven Moons). So you can really see that relationships like Zutara sell. José Saramago won a Nobel Prize of Literature with this book. Just so you guys know.

I’m just going to add one thig. About Z-man’s question about Zuko reshaping the destiny and Aang don’t I have an argument for that. It’s basically one of the basic notions of spiritualism. We have a destiny. We have somethings that have already been laid out for us. The road we follow is our choise. It’s kind of like that reshape of the clouds. He can reshape a cloud but it doesn’t change the fact that it is a cloud. It’s always going to be a cloud whatever shape it has. Aang’s destiny is the same thing. He can chose what he wants to do to get somewhere but that somewhere is already predestined. It’s like meeting certain people. You have that meeting predestined but the paths you follow before you get there are yours to choose. Just thought i say this. I don’t know if you guys understand.

You guys have been thinking about this stuff like WHOA.
The only thing I’ve come to realize is that the ying/yang theory never applied to Zuko and Katara, but Zuko and Aang.
Their stories have been parallel, but in reverse, if that makes sense. Zuko had to learn to rely on people, Aang has to learn to let go (And I don’t mean about the stuff that has happened to him before the series, as it is irrelevant, because it holds no bearing to the current story other than he is the last Airbender).
Yes, I intentionally worded it ‘had’ for Zuko and ‘has’ for Aang.

Sorry, but I must ask; why would they make a book that would explain the show to children who don’t get it when the show airs on a children’s channel? This simply does not make sense to me. And kataangers who do not read the book will not be happy with the finale if it is Zutara. I’m sorry, I disagree with nearly everything.

The theory was long but great. It actually made me a bit more hopeful again. I really wish I could have heard what Z was saying. Too bad for the tech problems because I’m sure that having a mature Kataanger’s POV on this subject would have been great to hear. I hope you ladies keep Zman around ^_^ keeps things a bit more mixed up. And Zman don’t listen to some of the flamers out there, if they didn’t realize that it was a tech problem that made you seem to speak over everyone then they weren’t paying any attention or are just dumb. Wow, you guys sure have thought about this alot…it’s like whoa.
Well, anyway I’ve got a theory (not a very big theory though.) but I’d like you guys to hear it.
Now, I know you know that Jet died but does the gang actually know he’s really dead?
I mean, sure Toph knew Jet wasn’t ok , infact far from okay and Sokka probably heard her but I’m not sure if she was able to tell if he was dying right there. Also they were only with the other Freedom Fighters in the first invasion besides Smellerbee and what’s him name who her with Jet, so maybe the other Freedom Fighters didn’t know about him dying either? When you see The Ember Island Players there’s a scene where Actor!Jet’s holding Actor!Katara and Actor!Katara says “Oh Jet you’re so bad.” after that we see Katara blush and Toph laughing…ok scratch that, even I would laugh if I had a boy friend who died that I saw in a play about ourselves where we’re both being over dramatic and sily. BUT after Jet had been hit by the leader of the Dai Li or something which caused his death if the Gaang truely knew he was actually dead than I think they would ALOT more upset, seeing somebody die doesn’t exactly make you feel pretty bad.
Also what I think is funny is sorta how Jet was like Katara’s husband/boyfriend who Aang knew that way before Zuko seemed to come up in that catagory, so Zuko might seem like guy who came to replace Jet/steel away Aangs mom (Katara) y’know kind of like a kid feels after there parents start dating other people after a divorce or after one of them dies. Even though I’m pretty sure Aang would say that Katara wasn’t his mom but that’s becuase he obviously didn’t have a mom to take care of him so his emotions around “love” is pretty confused.
Now on to something else, I’m not sure why, but I think that Chit Sang might be the one to lead the Gaang to Jun. Looked like she was in some kid of tough bar, a place that Chit Sang would know, but that’s just a feeling. Another feeling I had is that Ursa is either dead and Zuko finds out with Katara later or Ozai finds Ursa first (or at one point) and kills her. Another thing I gotta add is that I think another reason Ursa killed Azulon was that becuase he was the real mastermind that basically molded Azula’s mind to make her a sadistic crazy physco! (Probablly did so because she started to firebend at a very early age, younger than when we saw her in the flashbacks Zuko had in Zuko Alone, also the fact that they’re the royal family with many responsibilities and stuck with a war raging on, oh and one more thing could be that she had been training with Li and Lo or whatever there names are (the 2 old ladies).) Although I’m pretty sure Ozai helped along with that no wait instead he was probably the one that was the mastermind you can tell that Azulon is a tiny bit more caring than Ozai becuase of how he thought it would be terrible to not allow Iroh to take the throne specially after his only son was just killed.
Now to what should probably be looked over is Aangs nightmare in “Nightmares and Daydreams” something that stuck out was Toph who right after appearing dissapeared into the floor which could have meant that she was going to fall also how Sokka was engulfed in rock probably meant that he would encounter the Dai Li and the fire surrounding Katara could have meant that she would get attacked by Azula also in the begining it show them on Appa swirling around Momo who was trying to catch them which to me looked like how it was in the NYCC trailer when they were avoiding the missles and stuff.

Nice theory about what *and ‘m sure most would agree to* happening in the final episodes of the show.
I mean I’m not worried, I have faith it would still be epic shipping or no. *though at this point I would have perfer if the show didn’t do any ship baiting at all >.>*
meh, this is the first time I’ve ever really got into this whole ’shipping’ thing, thought it would be sort of fun *shrugs* despite the fact I took an interest in Kataang first *yet i read fanfiction based on zutara?? i’ve always liked the prospect of zutara (because in my mind i knew it wasn’t going to happen) but after awhile i thought that wow…maybe, JUST maybe Aang won’t get the girl in the end, it’ll be interesting to see that ending.
but who knows what goes on in the minds of the creators.
anywho, I’ll believe Zutara may still have a chance of happening *if they are going to end the show with a shipped pairing…* depending on the second kataang kiss…meh. And even then, I’ll still need to see some more development between zuko and katara.
I’m pretty sure most would agree that kiss takes place in episode 317.

it’s true…it did give me hope for zutara. who knew the guy was right. He sounded like he was desperate to find the right reasons for mizsweet’s theory. but the par where you said “Kataangers and Maikoans don’t go after Zutarians cause we will fight back”…Easy for you to say, you guys are a group.I’d have to disagree with that line. Well, in my gang we are all Kataangers. Well, I USE to be. Until I attended Miss Katisa’s classes. Then I switched. Now I’m a Zutarian. My friends(Kataangers) kicked me out of the gang. They said I betrayed them and that I’m making a huge mistake. Now I’m avoiding them as best as I could. And I must say I’m getting pretty good at it XD but whenever we do bump into each other they would always rub the whole kataang kiss in my face. But hey, it’s not that bad having people moc you of your mistakes.whenever I past by them, they call me traitor. It’s kind of fun cause whenever that happens I feel like Zuko XD anyways, Maybe I can show the first 50 minutes of it to them…*talking to self*(now all I need is a backup) ^-^ thanks so much for a great theory and let’s hope it’ll happen. Thanks for putting out this awesome theory! I have been a Zutara fan from the start & I’m a proud believer. There is WAY too much foreshadowing for Zutara to make Kataang a plausible ending to the story. But of course, you know that.
P.S. Serious technical difficulties - is there any way to turn Z’s mike WAY down? It’s so loud in comparison to Monica & Trishna’s that in order to be able to turn it up so I could hear them, whenever Z broke in with a cough or a comment it was like a soundblast in my ears, & after listening to the whole podcast I had a terrible headache. I know this isn’t a “studio production” kind of thing, and I really appreciate what your’e doing here, but I’d just like to be able to listen to future casts where everyone sounds the same (so I can save my head any future distress!!).

I’m pretty much impressed with your theory regarding how the animated version will end up compared to the book adaptation. I was indeed confused with how Aang restored his Avatar State in his battle with Ozai. The book suggest that it was to the Lion-Turtle’s influence that may have triggered his Avatar State, if not him releasing it in the same manner he did in Book 1 (through extreme stress). Nonetheless, how Aang will defeat Ozai in the book does make sense and may be brought in the animated version.
I still have doubts for a Zutara to develop further after the events of The Boiling Rock. Don’t get me wrong, I personally prefer Zutara over Kataang. But my concern is that in The Boiling Rock, Mai said to Azula that she loves Zuko more than she fears her. This pretty much indicates that, in spite of Zuko leaving her to join Aang and co., she still has feelings for him. If Zutara became a reality at this point, it would make Mai’s efforts in leaving Azula’s side almost in vain. Let’s not forget the book said Mai did end up as Zuko’s Queen in the last chapter. (”…He is now the new Fire Lord. And it seems he’s found a real soulmate in Mai.” — Chapter 10: Aang pgs. 52-53) Despite the simplicity and adaptation of the book, there is a high percentage of accuracy that the events of the book will translate to what happens in the finale.
The kissing scene with Aang and Katara will indeed happen in the finale. I believe it would be proper for Katara to kiss Aang once the war is finally over, regardless of who ships who. If a Zutara did blossom in the end, the kissing is meant more or less as a thank-you from Katara to Aang (a consolation for Kataang, of sorts). Otherwise, it is indeed those two.
Aang and Toph? Well, from what I recall, I never really did see those two having any romantic relationships whatsoever. In fact, there have been several instances in the series where Toph has an interest in Sokka. With less than 5 episodes remaining, it’s hard to see how an Aang/Toph relationship would develop at this point. An off-screen developing relationship, maybe.
I’m surprised you never gave insight regarding the Lion-Turtle. I really want to know more about this character as he/she/it became a defining factor in how final moments of the battle between Aang and Ozai turned out. The book gave the impression the Lion-Turtle is a god-like figure and a deux ex machina, which, if that is the case, will made my respects to the series go down a bit. Of course, I’m confident Mike & Bryan will explain more of the Lion-Turtle’s involvement in the finale.
