Ok, I can’t finish the whole thing tonight - it’s getting too late. But I’ll comment anyway. Great dynamic this week with the whole group! It was quite funny to have a Kataanger on, and hear you guys go back and forth with each other.
I must admit, I’ve been having minor Zutara fangirl spasms for the past few days now. Whenever I’m alone and I think about that hug, it’s like “WOAHMYGOD SQUEE!” I mean, that was such a wicked awesome hug. There was something so intimate about it. This is the first time in a long time when I’ve felt like our ship actually has a true chance.
But then there’s this part of me that pictures Mike and Brian sitting in some dark room, grinning and laughing like evil geniuses. Because that’s what they are, somewhere deep down - CoD convinced me of that. Then again, they could be pulling this strange reverse-psychology thing on us… meh, I’d better not think about it too much or my brain will explode.

you guys had me cracking up. i was laughing so hard my mom was probably like “wtf?” but yeah, that trailer was KICKASS awesome! and i loved that point about iroh, too, it would be sweet to see him as aang’s replacement firebending teacher. but of course, i want to see all the ZUTARA moments (especially ninja!zutara, hehe xD). AIR THE EPISODES ALREADY! *dies*
erm, anyway, to answer that question… i really didn’t have any opinion of zuko when i first started watching the show. like, i didn’t like him or hate him. it’s just in season 3 when i started fangirling so much, haha. xD
awesome podcast as usual! it was a great contrast to listen to some differing opinions.

Hello there, AnimeAngel901 here, (if any of you out there know who I am)
Anyways, in response to zmann966’s question: yes, I am now a zuko fangirl. That actually came from zutara though - not the other way around. I always liked Zuko (except for the few times I wanted to strangle him), but never really became a fangirl until he turned good, and I saw the potential of zutara (which, even kataangers have to admit, will be an EPIC frienship, if not an even more epic romance). So it was after I fell in love with zutara that I started fangirling over zuko, lol.
Anyways, I loved this podcast (like I have loved all of them - I am one of the many lurkers who don’t post comments here/send emails, lol). Monica, I hope you fix the problem with your mike, so we can hear what you have to say! And to erica and farrah….I’m glad that people older than me (I’m 17) spazz over zutara more than I do. You guys are so lucky you got to go to NYCC……being in Australia made it a little hard for me, lol. Glad I could hear about your spazzing (and literally hear it too, lol) though.
So yeah, nice work with this podcast guys, and zmann, it was interesting to hear your input as well, lol. Thanks to all of you for helping to keep the zutarian faith alive (and congratulations on turning zmann neutral, lol)!
P.S. All of you are absolutely BRILLIANT artists (even you Farrah, no matter how much you say otherwise
), and AWESOME zutarians. Your essays and stuff always make my day, especially when I agree with you. And I’ll stop sucking up now and go back to studying like I should be doing, lol.

Well let me first answer the Zuko fangirl thing. My answer is no I wasn’t. I be an Iroh fangirl *Drools* Zuko was just way to whinny to make my heart go all pitter pater.
As for the rest of the show, it was fun listing ta ya’ll argue with a Kataanger and get other points of view. But there are some things I’ve got ta disagree with ya’ll on.
I really really think the ‘nija” Katara and Zuko are from 316. And my reason is souly based on the firenation man on the ground. Ok so here my theory please don’t kill me as I am no where near as eloquint as ya girls.
I think that after rescuing Suki and Hakoda from the firenation prision the Gaang is going to get information that leads them to a place where somewhere along the line Katara regognized a face or a name from when her mother was killed (this might be when the see Jun as they are still in thier normal outfits and not trying to blend in). I really don’t think that Sokka is going to reqognize the name or the face. And why is this?
I think it’s because Katara WAS with her mom when she was killed and Sokka was with Hakoda or hiding like probably he was told. I think in front of Katara’s eyes she saw her mother die a horable death .. wich is why the loss of her mother has effected her so much.
I don’t think she’s really told anyone that she witnessed it. And while Hakoda might have suspected I think he was too grief striken to really press the point. And after a while Katara didn’t want to talk about what happened because it was too painful and being so young didn’t quite understand it. (I’ve had this theory since the begining … I don’t know why it just feels right)
So back to the eppy. Katara’s going to go all quiet on everyone and because she’s been acting wierd of late they are going to chalk it all up to mood swings or her hating Zuko. Zuko is going to be the only one who realizes somethings up.
Katara is going to try to go take this man out on her own and Zuko’s going to chatch her. It’s not going to be romantic but he is going to insist that he go with her.
When they get to the man Zuko stands back and Let’s Katara take over all control. I think she will get to the point when she’s about to kill him and Zuko is going to say something allong the lines of “then you will be no better then him”
Realizing he’s right they make a hasty escape back to camp. I think the hug sceen will partly come out of this eppisode. I don’t neccessarly think it will be 316 but it could be towards the end of it. She’s going to appologize to him and thank him from letting her make a big mistake and then the hug.
And while this isn’t a romantic hug it is what both of them need so that they can put thier pasts behind them and move forward. And it also shows us once again that it is Zuko not Aang that Katara can confide her deapest secreats to.

I loooove Zuko. Yes, at first, I was annoyed with him, but after the “I’ll save you from the pirates” and the spouting fire from his mouth out of anger by Iroh, he grew on me. And then I shipped it.
Yes I admit, Zuko’s sexy, he’s mighty fine, BUT I prefer Katara to ship up with him. XDDDD

To continue my above comment, I wanted to answer Zmann’s question. I felt sympathy and liked Zuko from the Storm, which was also when I started to ship Zutara. BUT, I didn’t and still don’t fangirl him. Of the all the boys in the show, I prefer Sokka. XD (Or older, and hopefully slightly more mature, Aang.)

I just have something to say to Zman966 ..This is a quote from AVidZktjo’s deviantart.
“SUKKA (Suki + Sokka) is considered CANON because they actually have a romantic relationship and are together as more than just friends. Their relationship is OFFICIAL, OBVIOUS, and HEAVILY PROMOTED in the show. So, SUKKA is most definitely CANON!
But what about Kataang? Can we call Kataang CANON? The truth is that if we call Kataang canon then we MUST call Zutara canon because both currently stand in the same position. Kataang is OBVIOUS but not official, meaning it hasn’t happened. Zutara is HEAVILY PROMOTED but not as obvious as Kataang and also hasn’t happened. This one was kind of hard to conentrate on. It was to much spazzing. When Farah could not hear, I couldn’t either. Usually you guys repeat stuff, but this time you didn’t. I feel kind of disappointed because I was really looking forward to this. LOL, I’ll get over it.

I guess I’ll start off by answering Z’s question: Yes, I’ve always liked Zuko best, but it was because he was the only character in the show that really caught my interest (besides Sokka for his jokes, and Toph for toughness). I guess my first impression wasn’t that fair though, because I first saw Avatar by accident and was watching eps “City of Walls and Secrets” and “Tales of Ba Sing Se.”
So here are my notes from the podcast, starting from the point where I felt the need to self-comment as I floundered in a sea of…well…airheaded arguments. Prior to this point I was actually following, but the only thing new that I learned was that the 2 Zuko falling scenes were from different eps.
- As far as Z’s “amazing defense” of Aang, as perfect as he may make him out to be for all the challenges he has dealt with, this is the very reason that people cannot connect with him. Aang’s too perfect, so that’s why so many people have connected with Zuko instead, whether or not you think he went through as many issues. Not that I fault Aang for his character – that was up to the writers, and they would have been complete idiots to not make the AVATAR a heroic and nearly faultless character. His only real flaw is occasional selfishness with a little pride, which frankly, is far from realistic, but expected in the epic hero type (along with tendency to womanize). - Oh and, by the way, Aang STILL never had to face the reality of ANY of the people close to him being downright evil and hating him. He faced a great deal of LOSS, but that is not the same thing as being REJECTED. In my opinion, a little rejection in the girl department might teach him that not everything comes as easy to him as mastering all the elements. - Why did Z feel the need to degrade Zuko to nothing more than the “hot emo guy?” Seriously, this story is too deep so far to be so cheesy in the end as to say “Sorry Aang, I’m dumping you for the hot emo guy” OR “Okay well, you like me Aang and I like you too I guess, so let’s just be together!” Neither choice is good writing or very interesting. Katara will make a mature decision, because that’s who she is. - By the way, Z is much less of a female expert than you think (*ahem* on the issues of development/maturity), and CONGRATULATIONS! He managed to waste about an hour bringing what WERE higher thinking arguments back down to the “age and size compatability” variety. Seriously, do guys really only rate people based on physical age and appearance rather than intelligence and maturity? - If Mon’s mic was working, this would have actually been a decent podcast discussion, because she excels at diffusing lame arguments. My apologies for a less-than-glowing review, but I learned almost NOTHING new. Thanks again for the essay MizSweet, by the way, as it made my week, and thanks to GreenifyMe and Trishna87 for their journals. I think I was most offended that your “guest” spent most of the podcast badgering you girls out of what might have been some great discussions about all the interesting happenings from the trailer and the 317 clip (and I’m not just referring to Zutara).

Hello, mssoc here from Dev. To answer Z’s question- No, I did not like Zuko in the begging. I was intrigued, but did not personally like him by any means. In the beggining, i shipped Kataang. It wasn’t until CoD that I shipped Zutara. The reasons being: 1. I learned that it was the first time for either of them to open up to anybody about their past. They truly have a lot in common; from the death of their mothers, to even the personality traits they share. 2. I figured out on my own that Katara did not reciprocate the feelings Aang had for her. Sure, she gave him hugs and kisses, but only in a motherly fashion. Aang was raised by men, and solely men at his home air temple. To my knowledge, Katara was the first young girl he’d seen that was within his reach. Immidiatly, she would invitably become his mother figure, in that he never had one to begin with.

I mean, she already must have guessed that the guy has something for her. Is not that she said, ok, the guy just wanted to kiss ramdolly lol.
Officially, Katara reacting bad already the second time, is bad for kataang.
Still, doesnt matter the situation, what Aang says, to react that way to a kiss is bad signal. Specially the second time.
Still even Aang opening his chakra this would be the third time of him saying that, and the second time kssig her, and still, she reacting bad. AND WHY TO KISS HER IF HE HAS TO LET HER GO????? Is idiot or what? And like If she feels the same. Sometimes I think that Aang really thinks that she feels the same.

A hug doesnt make Zutara canon, but it confirms forgiveness, and other scenes a lot of time an adventures together. What would mean development for something for than friendship.
What would confirm Zutara there is the kiss that Aang gives to Katara.
Aside that in the world of ATLA, looks like girls marry pretty young. For the age comment.

Well, I just have to say that I’ve been a Zuko fan even before I started watching the show, mainly cuz the first piece of ‘Avatar’ fanart I ever saw was one of Zuko, and that’s what peaked my interest. And coincidentally, the first episode I ever watched from start to finish was “The Storm”, aka “Zuko’s First Big Flashback”. So, yeah, he’s been my favorite character for a long time. Bryan even drew him on the first autographed ‘Avatar’ poster I got after I told him Zuko was my favorite character. He was like “There you go! New Hair Zuko!” (I had told him I absolutely LOVED Zuko’s season 2 look, this was the summer between the first and second parts of season 2) I think it’s because Zuko has the humanity and confusion that almost everyone can relate to; Wanting the approval of your parent but at the same time wanting the approval of yourself. That makes for a great character and great character development potential.
Oh, and my roommate is unaware of this, but she is a Zutarian at heart cuz she was agreeing with everything Farah, Monica and Erica were saying. XD

I didn’t care about Zuko at first. :3 My fav character from the begining was Katara. When I realized how screwed up Zuko’s life was he caught my interest and in Season Two, when he was going through so much, he became my fav on par with Katara. Now he may have passed her, I’m not sure. I love them both. XD But I thought it would end Zutara from when they first met because “Water Tribe Peasant” + “Fire Nation Prince” seemed just too delicious to pass. (total opposites!)
As for the trailer, the Kataang Antikiss prolly wasn’t the same episode as the Aang candle meditation, because he’s wearing different clothes. ..Well, that’s how it seems to me. And you see Toph again, falling with Sokka.

Ah, okay. Sorry for all the comments. I have to do this as I listen, or else I forget what’s on my mind. To answer the question regarding Zuko, I usually am automatically intrigued by the antagonist, but Zuko’s attitude in the beginning really got on my nerves… at first. Like, before there was justification for the way he was. After a little exploration of his past and his growth as a character, he began to grow on me. Before that, I saw him as a rude, whiny brat. I think most of the characters had to grow on me, really. I didn’t really care either way about Aang. He was just a child. I mean, he acted like a little kid with his penguin sledding and his innocence. I’m not usually drawn to those types of characters, but I didn’t dislike him. In “The Waterbending Scroll” I think it was Zuko’s treatment of Katara that got me especially intrigued. He’s usually a jerk, even to his kind and understanding uncle, so for him to try and use reason instead of outright force was… weird.
Wait… I think I need to re-watch. I’m starting to forget ;_;
Anyway, great Podcast as always, mic spazzing aside. I’m really sad about Mon’s mic, though.
But very interesting discussion, very funny, and the laughing is seriously contagious. I shouldn’t listen to these in the evening. I should know better, shouldn’t I, Farah? I cracked up when I got to the part where Z IMed me about SDCC XD

I use the same theory as to why people used to ship Harry/Hermione, its because the girls totally thought they identified with hermione (so didnt) but they deluded themselves into thinking they were like hermione, and usually had a crush on daniel radcliffe or harry. THE END.

Well, to greendesire, I only mildly shipped (as in, I didn’t really care, lol) Harry/Hermione, but thats because I didn’t particularly like Ron. Sure, he grew on me, but I used to get really annoyed at him. But harry and hermione would never have worked, I know that. They could only ever be friends.
Nothing like zutara - zutara would be an awesome friendship/romance because they have a great connection. They are alike, and yet opposites at the same time. They would have a great relationship - fight and play together (more of the fighting/teasing I think
).
And I totally agree with the person who imagines Bryke in a dark room cackling. Seriously, they must be so proud of themselves. Damn them and their awesomeness! lol

I did not love Zuko.
I probably still do not love Zuko or want him for myself, because we are too different. However, he and Katara grew up in similar circumstances, so to me, they should fit together as a couple. Thanks!

For the record… I ship Zutara and I HATED Zuko for most of the first two seasons. But I still shipped Zutara during season two. So yeah… sorry Zmann966.

Seriously, Iroh=the only character on the show with any balls.
People do Zuko a great disservice by labeling him the “hot emo guy” though. Is Suki only the “hot warrior chick”? Does that mean Sokka broke poor Toph’s heart because Suki was older and hotter? No one with any sense says that, because Sokka loves Suki for being the person she is. This whole thing is actually a stupid double standard, because according to the fandom, it’s more okay for Sokka to choose an older girl than for Katara to choose an older guy. “Katara shouldn’t fall in love with Zuko, because it would be a bad influence on children to show a girl choosing an older guy” isn’t a good argument, IMO. It’s sort of like the argument that “Katara ‘cheating’ on Aang would be a bad influence”, because people totally ignore the fact Sokka courted Yue when Suki wasn’t around.
Double-standards, LOL.

OK, note that i’ve been listening to these podcasts since you guys started them XD (i’ll comment on past entries later..) and i don’t have a DA account, but i will soon! Cause I feel kinda dumb just checking you guy’s journals on DA everyday.. ok moving on.
I really loved the discussions you guys had, like connecting scenes and what not. So you said that possibly the whole “Aang meditating at Ember Island(?) cause he might be letting go of Katara” and… well, he was wearing his Air Nomad clothes when he was meditating, and it looked like he was wearing his Fire Nation clothes when he kissed Katara and she backed away in *shock*. So i dunno, I think they ARE in the same episode but whatever. And yes, the NYCC looked awesome and i REALLY wished i was there!! (i’m in the same freakin state too! >:O) I hope you guys had an UBERLY-AWESOME time and it looked like you did!! ^^ the trailer.. ZOMG. i think we all reacted the same to the hug.. i’ve been spazzing out about it ever since.
Mkay since this is getting long I’d better wrap up with the whole Zuko thing. I think the first episode I actually WATCHED-watched.. was Zuko Alone. so then when little Zuko runs to Ozai going “where’s mom?” and Ozai was looking away in the garden i was all “omg.. the dad is sad cause his wife is gone….” haha XDD So then I went back and watched the others and to be honest, i didn’t really like Zuko in the beginning. I didn’t really favor any ship, but in CoD i was really mad when Aang and Iroh walked in. At the time, I thought Zuko was OK… so then after it aired i think i became a Zutarian and i love/respect Zuko now. Not a fangirl though just love how Zuko has became such a good person after everything he’s been through…, sorry

That’s an extremely broad generalization. You’d have to ignore the fans who don’t have crushes on Harry/Zuko (like myself and many others) because they don’t fit into that one-size fits all stereotype. So no, not “THE END”.
If all Zutara shippers just project themselves into Katara, explain me. I wouldn’t date Zuko even if my life depended on it because he’s just not my type. (too moody and troubled for me, and I like them more jolly yet serene like Iroh) Katara’s actually my least favorite main character, though I can appreciate her character and sometimes like her. Toph, for example, develops in a far more interesting way and her flaws are more believable, so she’s my favorite.
So, my reasons for shipping Zutara boil down to this: IT’S FUN.

You know what scares the crap out of me? I agreed with Z alot of the time - i.e. the lack of context in the kataang (retch) kiss. We really can’t know for sure until the episodes air so we’ll just have to wet our pants with anticipation in the meantime.
Oh and Z, I totally resent the whole “zutara shippers = zuko fangirls.” TOUCHE. You know I am no fangirl!

I have only one thing to say: AWESOME!!!! I seriously LOVE your podcast, in fact, i always look forward to it every week!!
A few little comments to the zmann person: no offense, but how would you, a GUY, know when a GIRL hits puberty? girls can hit puberty at any age between 10 and like 14 or something. Katara is about 14, so I’m pretty damn sure she’s already hit puberty by now. and she does have boobies. you can even find screenshots. if anyone, its TOPH who doesnt have boobies
And to Mizsweet, it’s so bad about your mic, i mean, you just got a new one, and its already spazzing…but i don’t really think it was a technical thing. i think it was just cuz you were speaking too close to the mic. like, everytime i ever speak to close to my speaker, its sounds just like how your mic spazzing sounded.
and when I first started shipping zutara (and started watching avatar), i actually thought zuko was GROSS AND CREEPY. cuz i saw him in the cave of two lovers in his peasant clothes, and i was like, “ew.” but, ive grown to like him…but i didnt like him when i first started. i actually liked sokka at first!
and as for zuko’s fall, i actually thought it was the same scene as when katara catches him in the beginning of the trailer. cuz if you look closely, zuko’s wearing the same outfit in both scenes.
honestly, i dont have much else to say about this podcast except it’s totally pwnsome and i cant wait for more!!!!

yeah, I have to admit I first started shipping Zutara cuz I wanted ZUko for myself, and I felt I was like Katara. *guilt*

hey Z, you asked if we ship zutara just because we wanted zuko for ourselves? i mean really, when we first shipped zutara (for most, episode 9, waterbending scroll) he was ALMOST BALD, (not that that’s bad or anything) raging with wants for the avatar, tempermental, agasty, annoying, cocky and just a butt to iroh. HOW COULD YOU WANT A GUY LIKE THAT? (some might, mimi doesn’t)
the reason why i liked zutara was because i saw katara as an amazing character, gentle, yet wanting to pwn ass, and then zuko, the one who DOES pwn ass, and tempermental. IN ONE MOMENT, katara brings out a softness in him. that’s what made me fall. her influence on him, he doesn’t get mad at her, break out and yell at her when she is tied to the tree. he also says I’LL PROTECT YOU FROM THE PIRATES, i mean seriously… would you say that to your enemy… normaly? i definitly would not prefer zuko for myself. katara is the one that can make him change the most. she is the one who can bring him to good, and make him truely understand.
seriously, if you wanted a guy from avatar it would have to be sokka…
i laughed at his jokes, so i know we would get along…. although he’s a pimp so maybe not.

Zuko fan girl I am not.
I started to ship zutara because of the potential it had way in the beginning. It’s actually why I started to avidly watch the show in the first place. In all honesty I really didn’t care for either character when I first started to ship zutara. I merely shipped it because I had a theory on it and I wanted to see if it was correct and so far it is.

Post number 2. Anyway, great podcast. It was great seeing a Kataanger get completely owned (kust kidding.) It was a pretty even argument.
Okay, so first of all, I don’ t think that the Zuko falling scenes are different, just shot from a different angle. I haven’t really analyzed it, so I can’t be too sure. I don’t think that the creators would make Zuko “fall to his death” twice. If they are different scenes, I don’t think Zuko will die, simply because that would be a really lame death. If Zuko were to die in this series, it would be dramatic and shocking and I doubt they would hint at it in a trailer.
I agree with z about the Kataang kiss. Just like the DOBS kiss, it is meant to be ambiguous. We’re not really sure what happened before or after the kiss, so to say that Katara backed away in disgust is taking it a little too far. I can’t really say more on that matter, since it is a matter of opinion. Zutarians will say she hated it. Kataangers will say something different.
Also, I agree with the Zutarians about the character development argument. I think that Zuko has developed more than Aang. Zuko has completely turned his back on his nation after striving so hard to get the respect and love of his father. I do think that Aang has developed as character, but not to the extent that Zuko has. I basically look at it this way… If I have never watched Avatar in my life and simply saw the first episode and 312, I would not think that Zuko was the same person. Could you honestly picture the stubborn, determined, jerkish, and pro-Fire nation Zuko kneeled on the ground before the gaang and begging for forgiveness? I certainly couldn’t. Aang is also a bit more mature, but I still see a lot of his Season 1 characteristic now, unlike Zuko.

OMG I GOT TO SEE SOME SCENES FROM EPISODES 14 AND 15!!! ZUKO AND MAI HAVE A FIGHT! SHE IS ALL LIKE OH ZUKO BLAH BLAH YOU LEFT ME WITH ONLY ONE LETTER BLAH AND HE IS LIKE I HAD TO DO IT FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THEN HE LOCKS HER UP IN THE CELL AND RUNS XD!!!! oh and there’s a really cute scene with suki where sokka is introducing her to zuko ad she is like:”we’ve met before! he burned down my village!” and zuko is like” sorry about that! nice to see you again” and mai helps zuko escape and azula is like “you know the consequences” and mai is like “oh i really am in love with zuko and that love is bigger than my fear of you” and azula goes to attack her and ty lee cuts in and both ty lee and mai are arrested. So what do you think of this? do you think this will affect zutara? oh and zuko tells sokka about mai and sokka is like:”that gloomy girls that always sighs?” lol OH my god i’m just spazzing right now over this

I thought this episode was… kind of lacking. Most of it was just arguing. No offence, but if I wanted arguing, I could just go up to some Kataangers and tell them Katara is motherly towards Aang. But I don’t want arguing.
That’s why I listen to this.
I was hoping it’d be slightly spazzy discussion of the trailer and preview from Ember Island players, etc, but most of it was just teasing and hearing the same arguements for the millionth time. And not hearing Monica at all, which was sad.

I’m a Zutarian but i think maybe Zuko is comforting Katara when they hug after maybe meeting her mother’s killer or something. Maybe Katara is forced to give up on Aang and thatz why she’s taking comfort in Zuko.
I think Aang needs to learn like Zuko that the world is MORE important. Like Zuko left Mai to go to the Avatar. Aang needs to let go of Katara to save the WHOLE world…
Hasn’t Avatar happened over the span of a couple of months or year. Book 1 is Winter. Book 2 is Spring and i think Book 3 is summer…
TT_TT I feel horrible. I like Zuko and think he should end up with the lead girl,i know i’m horrible, BUT it’s not the only reason i ship Zutara. It’s just i think they’re really compatible and it would be hep Zuko if Katara was there for him. I hated Zuko in season 1 cuz he was the scary villian guy, but i think the vulnerable Zuko needs Katara. I’m sorry >.

But I don’t think the first introduced female character is gonna be a Mary Sue ¬__¬ , thats just, no. Katara being the ‘I can’t do this cause you have to go off to fight the war’ i think will NOT happen, cause I think she will fight the war and be kick-ass too. To just have her as the Mary-sue would be a horribling ending to her awesome ‘fighting-spirit and not just sit around’ character.
And in responce!I didnt like zuko at first, he always came when i least wanted him too and caused trouble . But at the same time i never like kataang from the very begging , it was just Bleh to me. And i also dont like zukos ponytail, his new hair is much better.
