Episode 4: Beating the Kataang Back With the Common Sense Stick!
Hey guys! Well, we figured, since SO many Zutarians still have their worries about Kataang, and since we haven’t delved too deep into our rival ships, we figured we would dedicate an entire podcast to disproving the one and only….KATAANG. XDDD
We cover all the major Kataang arguments…and even have a couple revelations.
This is one of our best podcasts. We hope you guys enjoy it!! And remember…e-mail your questions to thezutarianoasis@yahoo.com . Don’t leave your questions in the comments of the podcast! But please feel free to leave all your thoughts and feedback. They are greatly appreciated.

Oh sweet, I got a shoutout and my email was read! 8P Exciting.
As always, love the podcast, keep it up!
Thanks you guys!
April 10th, 2008 at 4:33 am
OH JEEZ!!! STUPID PAGE ATE MY COMMENT TWICE DX
Anyway, I love this Podcast for all the arguments against Kataang. I’ve talked to some Kataangers who believe their arguments are flawless and are eager to put down Zutara, so this made me incredibly happy. That, and Farah possibly going to NYCC
That made me so happy!
Aang liking Katara makes me think of little kids who have crushes on their babysitters XD
April 10th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Hey the sculpture you guys were talking about is called the Pieta by Michelangelo (Pieta means “the pity” incidentally so make of that what you will).
Here are two images for everyone to compare: Pieta: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8a/Michelangelo%27s_Pieta_5450_cropncleaned.jpg TCOD: http://dvdscreenshots.avatarspiritmedia.net/220/839.jpg
Also another thing to note about the headband (you guys were a bit staticy on my comp at that point, so if you mentioned it already just ignore this) is that at the end when they’re escaping on Appa from the dance party, Toph is the one who says “I think you really helped those kids Twinkletoes” while Katara just kissed him on the cheek. Toph is the one that understands what he was trying to do - bring joy into the lives of kids who have been denied it - because he did that for her first. Aang sort of brought toph to freedom, which I always thought was significant. Plus, maybe this is just me, but I’d rather have someone love me because we were equals not because I knew they would always take care of me.
Anyway thanks for another great podcasts, they always make aws a little more bearable.
April 10th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
wow… that was awesome
I, personally, like Toph too much to even think that she is going to die in the end T_T (she is with Zuko my favorite character and when I think of Zuko dying I think of going mad and ending up in a padded cell -.-) But Aang saw her in the swamp what means that he is going to lose her… I don’t want to think about it, it is too horrible TT____TT And I love Taang =) it’s just so cute and funny
and Toph could always get Aang’s feet down on the ground while he could help her fly ^____^ figuratively spoken of course ^^
Anyway great Podcast, I’m looking forward to the Maiko discussion ^^
April 10th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Wow! Great episode! This was a great discussion–you touched upon the KataangvsZutara argument perfectly. Zutara forever!
And–TAANG! Horaay!!! You should talk about them too a little more often! xD I agree that Toph will eventually die–but I think that Koh will have something to do with it, and Aang will travel into the Spirit World to get her back. =] I heard of a theory once that says Toph is the reincarnation of the Avatar’s past lover, the girl whose face Koh stole. Interesting idea, huh?
Can’t wait for the next podcast!

To me the Kataang relationship only adds up to one thing. Aang must learn that love is about letting go. I once heard “If you love someone very much you have to let her go. If she comes back to you she will be your forever, if she doesn’t she was never yours to begin with!” To me this sums up the Kataang relationship. If Aang really loves Katara he has to let her be happy, that is what love truly is. That is why i think that the creators gave so much emphasis to the purple road in which he was to lead him to a higher astral plane. It is very simple actually. But I also think this works both ways (I’m an avid Zutarian but I rationalize things to much so I always see every side of a cube) If Aang lets Katara go, it doesn’t mean he can’t be with her. The guru asked him to let his attachment for her go no really stop loving her and move on. The thing is that in that particular episode we saw how childish Aang really is. He is selfish. He rather have Katara than save the world. That is where it all sums up. First the world, secondly Katara and he wasn’t willing to put the world before her. If you kind off think about this she is his biggest weakness. Get the waterbender and you get the Avatar. He can’t be weak like that. Love is a good thing but there are priorities and as the Avatar his true purpose in life is to maintain balance not fall in love. There is also the argument “Roku married Aang can to”. If Kataangers really think about it Roku isn’t Aang. He lived in an entirely different époque and his duties were different. He hadn’t had to sacrifice so much. Aang must end a war; he can not go around following a girl everywhere she goes! What about the way Zuko acts around her? I honestly don’t believe that he is afraid of Katara. He knows he is not going to slip up. I think it matters to him what SHE thinks of him. Sokka mocks him too and he fights Sokka back. He yells at the Avatar, FOR GOD’S SAKE! I would be more afraid of the Avatar than of a silly waterbender girl. He just thinks her love is important, that is why he doesn’t fight her back! I would be “ew” too if Aang kissed me. Who would choose Aang over ZUKO; THE HOT MAN??? Lool. As much as I hate to say this I do think someone in the team is going to die. I just hope it’s not Toph. To me Aang should die really.
Do you read all of these comments?
April 10th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
well i know I do
April 10th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Yeah, Hayley Foster is zutara-shewolf777 xD
-nodsnods- This is actually my first time reading a podcast xD I’ll need to listen to these more often.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Even if I’d rather not think about the possibility, I suppose even if Toph were to die, there’s always what vinebender Hue said in “The Swamp”:
“In the swamp we see visions of people we’ve lost, people we loved… folks we think are gone. But the swamp tells us they’re not. Time is an illusion and so is death.”
April 10th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
You know, this is probably one of the greatest Zutara vs Kataang discussion I’ve heard in a LONG time! Like, seriously. You ppl are SO FREAKIN lucky you can go to the NYCC! i wish I could go, but then again, I live all the way in Cali so going there isn’t much of an option.
But I hope you guys can go there and be able to represent the Zutarians that aren’t able to go! You know, I also noticed how like the gAang members act like nothing happened on the episode after. Also, I was having an argument with a Kataanger the other day, and they mentioned something about the episode “The Boy in the Iceberg” or “The Avatar Returns” for some reason. Also, I remember somebody saying that no one in the Avatar World has actually been given the label of being a “very powerful bender” word for word, just like how all of Aunt Wu’s predictions are(word for word). And I agree with Trishna87, except for the zutara episodes, I hate season 1 too. Just Sokka, Aang, and Katara being the only gAang members in season 1 was just so annoying to me.
I think one thing about the show that the fans like about it is the fact that Mike and Bryan are constantly putting in these small twists and such in each episode and how it just practically makes our fandom into Avatar even greater!
Before I first saw Cave of Two Lovers, i was browsing through TurboNick, and I came across a thumbnail for Cave of Two Lovers. (This was like a month before Crossroads of Destiny aired b/c I hadn’t really watched Avatar anytime before that) The thumbnail had a picture of Zuko on it, so I thought it might be Zutara. Of course I was stupid then. And after I saw it, I was just like, completely frozen. I yelled, I screamed, my neighbor came over to yell at me to stop screaming ironically, and I’m pretty sure I died. But then, I swallowed down my pride and re-watched it to get what the real meaning of that one episode was, and I was like, “WHAT THE HELL?! I’m so FREAKIN happy!” and all that cuz that was when I realized that it wasn’t much of KAtaang at all! Then came the hiatus of Avatar as soon as season 2 ended and that was when I did some research on the background of Zutara and all that.
(Little side note to TRishna87: I heard your giggling in the background while Greenifyme was reading the caption thing, and I swear, I was laughing with you the entire time! I was listening carefully to what Greenifyme was reading and I swear, i cracked up just as you were laughing too! HAHA
)
I think all girls would’ve felt incredibly offended when their FRIEND said that they would kiss them if it was a matter between life and death. Haha, I know I would! Haha.
*GASP* Wow! That’s a GREAT theoryish explanation you have there about Cave of Two lovers and Crossroads of DEstiny, Trishna. *is clapping*. Actually, you know what I noticed about Song? She kind of resembles the main character from the korean drama “Dae Jang Guem” not only by the outfit she was wearing(which is also a traditional koeran hambok) but also by her doctor-y ways. And, I also noticed that if you like mix Song and Jin(from Tales of Ba Sing Se), you can pretty much get Katara’s nice personality.
Aang is so selfish! I hate him! And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only besides Trishna87. “Your frikkin job is the frikkin avatar!” haha, I was laughing so hard when you said that cuz you were like saying “frikkin” so many times and I just cracked up.
-skipping through everything all at once-
OMG!!!!! When you mentioned the thing about the similarities between Ursa and Katara, I was like “OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” the entire time!!! And there’s always that saying going around, ” Guys tend to marry the girl that is similar to his own mother!”
TOPH CAN’T DIE!! NO!!! TOPH CAN”T DIE!!! NO!!!! TOPH IS LIKE THE ONE THAT MAKES THE GAANG, THE GAANG!! SHE SHALL NOT DIE!!! Damn, Aang should die. Not Toph, Aang!
I know it’s kinda annoying that everytime I always tend to write these LONG comments. But I can’t help it. YOUR PODCAST IS SO FRIKKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Toph can’t die!
Update soon!!
Peace out~ zkjanie

First off, I love these podcasts, they’re very much something I look forward to.
Secondly about the Star Wars thing:
No Luke didn’t get the girl. And thank God because Leia Organa was his twin sister.(Their parents were Padme Amidala and Anakin [Darth Vader], however since Padme died and Vader didn’t know his children survived/were born they were quitely seperated and adopted)
Leia however did end up with Han Solo, who is pretty much as awesome as Zuko:
——————————————————————————– Han Solo: Hey, Your Worship, I’m only trying to help. Princess Leia: Would you please stop calling me that? Han Solo: Sure, Leia. Princess Leia: You make it so difficult sometimes. Han Solo: I do, I really do. You could be a little nicer, though. Come on, admit it. Sometimes you think I’m all right. Princess Leia: Occasionally, maybe… when you aren’t acting like a scoundrel. Han Solo: Scoundrel? Scoundrel? I like the sound of that. [Han starts to massage Leia’s hand] Princess Leia: Stop that. Han Solo: Stop what? Princess Leia: [timidly] Stop that. My hands are dirty. Han Solo: My hands are dirty, too. What are you afraid of? Princess Leia: Afraid? Han Solo: You’re trembling. Princess Leia: I’m not trembling. [Han moves in closer] Han Solo: You like me because I’m a scoundrel. There aren’t enough scoundrels in your life. Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men. Han Solo: I’m a nice man. Princess Leia: No, you’re not. You’re… [they kiss] —————— To relate to Zutara: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=nzhwyc&s=3
The comparison actually makes a lot of sense since Aang and Katara act like family anyways….
Keep up the good work!

Great job on this podcast! I really liked it!! Not too much spazzy (internet, not you guys).
I loved the stuff about Toph brining out (sometimes) the mature side of Aang. I totally agree with Taang hopefully happening!
Though I do NOT want Toph to die!!!!! NOOOOOO.
I’ve got some questions, so I’m gonna go and e-mail it to your e-mail.
Great podcast and I’m looking forward to one discussing Maiko and one about Sokka!!
Thanks again ~Rose

Hello, there!
Well I just have some things to add. When Katara realizes that Aang is actually a bender she looked so disappointed… but I think she thought of the posibility because so far she had never met another bender. Then, Aang was a powerful bender who fit on that description so far. NOT that he was. She just thought of that because Sokka said the exact words “powerful” and “bender” though as you and I said, she got worried, disappointed, down.
Then, one theory I have.
I think, Katara had never got out of her tribe, her home was all the world to her besides the gran gran’s stories. So when she begins her journey, she first found herself dazzled about Aang (IM NOT SHIPING KATAANG OR ANYTHING), he was kind, and he helped her; besides, he’s her hope. But then she understands, there are so many other guys, older, mature, like Haru and Jet so she realize Aang is only a child. And so there are other benders rather than just the Avatar. So as the time goes on, the first attachment to Aang just disappear and the motherly care is the only thing that prevails.
About the Kataang scenes, I agree they are dull, but even then if Kataangers don’t see this Edipo-complex-relationship, I think that is the most pathetic relationship. She’s older which means a difference in maturity and not to say physical… sorry if I’m rude to critizice their moments but I agree they are nothing more than friendship, Katara acts so motherly sometimes… hugs, scolds, seriousness, I don’t know sometimes I beg for someone to calme he down ¬¬
Anyway
One last thing… I don’t think Toph would die. I might think that about Iroh but it’s hard for me to think that destiny for her. Anyway it’s just a hintch nothing more, so if she dies, maybe I won’t believe for a loooong time U.U
Great job girls, it’s awesome hearing you, though it’s kind of difficult when the signal dies x_x Resuri-chan

Wonderful podcast, girls! I applaud your awesomeness and Kataang-argument-pwning skills–they make my week/existence happy. Keep up the good work!
April 11th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
does anyone have the link to that one pic on dA they were talking about. the one vaugly describing Oma & Shu and at the end its like “How is this Kataang?”
April 11th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
What was the site for the spoiler? I think Toph looked AMAZING in that episode where they dressed up. Toph really suits that kind of dress up. I think Katara could fit in with Fire Nation clothing and Water Tribe. I always thought the episode where Toph meets the gang, The Blind Bandit, it almost looks like Aang & Toph are flirting. Does anyone know where the Guru came from? Cuz his accent made him not part of any of the nations. I agree tha Katara and Ursa are so similar. In both personality and hair style (Book 3). TOPH CAN”T DIE! it would like killing of the most amazing character ever!!! Zutara forever
April 11th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
muy bien mis queridas niñas!
would like if you can do a postcast about what says the chronicles of the EK in the tale of Katara and in the tale of Zuko.

To Aquay: Look in the “After Podcast Exploration” page on the right hand column of the homepage for all the links.
April 13th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Wow! This was probably the best podcast because you brought up a lot of points about Kataang that I hadn’t thought of before. Now I am much more confident as a Zutarian! When the Kataangers used to throw all their evidence at my face - the cheek kisses, the COTL, the confession during DOBS, blah blah blah - it was always kind of jarring because yeah, everything seems so Kataang-y. BUT! Now that I’ve listened to this I see what Kataangers fail to! Kataang may have all these moments BUT even with those moments we have seen NO development of romantic feelings nor any change WHATSOEVER in their relationship! I hadn’t really thought about that until you guys mentioned it! And if we look at everything that’s happened, it would be “out of the blue” for a shippy, romantic Kataang relationship in the coming episodes. (Which is ironic since that is what Kataangers always claim is the problem with having Zutara in the show!) So all in all, I’M SO GLAD YOU HAVE THIS PODCAST! Especially this Kataang-centered episode because it definitely renewed my already strong faith in Zutara.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:51 am
is this just me or is the “dancing dragon” we see in “the firebending masters” a little bit like “the golden dragon dance” in one of the avatar shorts? because everytime i see 313 i think of it and think “omg, sooo zutara foreshadowing”
:D keep the great work up ^^
April 15th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Hello again. I tried posting this at deviantart but my account is stupid and it didn’t let me post, So i read GreenifyMe’s journal back at da about the supposed spoiler and i thought it was hilarious how she got fuming through her nostrils over that, GO YOU woot. So i was thinking about somethings today and i debated with my only friend that’s a Zutarian ( I don’t think there are many Zutarians here in Portugal) and we were talking about our theories. That thing about Ozai claiming himself Phoenix Lord and making Azula Fire Lord took me by surprise (well not the Azula part because i had this theorie that she would somehow get the throne, i just wasn’t expecting this to be this way) So as we all know Ozai is human. He is a normal firebender blah blah. So, except for the army what made Ozai such a dreadful opponent for the Avatar himself? Especially when he had people to back him up? Nothing i think. So i guess Ozai will get some extra power from something to boost up himself and make the battle more epic. I’m also guessing that the only TRUE, REAL Zutara will happen in the end. There will be a built up yes, but they will only see each other as each other’s destinies at the very end. Like when Aang kissed Katara but this time with a lot more meaning and emotion to it. And that’s when the little, annoying bubble-boy will see that he and Kat weren’t meant to be. Okay going back to the anti-Zutara podcast. I agree that it was just a crazy attempt to make us worry (and it worked for like an hour) until i started thinking. Why would they make such heavy foreshadowing if Zutara was never meant to be? Why fill season one with so many Zutara moments? After that they diminished but it’s intensity in story-line increased. So right now i’m with you, confidant that Zutara will happen and we will have the last laugh. I mean we sweat, we cry, we suffer, we rejoice ad after all that waiting we will be rewarded for sticking up to something we believe. In my humble opinion even if Zutara doesn’t become canon i will be happy because i supported it till world’s end and that will make me feel accomplished. Just have a request, make us all Zutarians proud of ourselves at comic con. I wish i could go but it’s not like i live next door to NYC. So i hope you record things and show it to us that same day or the day after. I’m going to a Nightwish concert but i’m going to be thinking about it all day lol. Just one question what is it? The event i mean.
Many hails to the Zutarian Generals, you are so head to head with Iroh XD
April 15th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Ok this came out wrong. My last question was : What time is it? ok sorry
April 16th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
just have to say very nice podcast you guys made me laugh throughout the entire thing. Very nice points you guys came out with. You guys always find new evidence that even I haven’t realized before. I guess that’s because I neverminded either kataang or zutara one or the other happening doesn’t bother me. But hell who am I kidding? I have turned to the darkside and joined the army of zutara! bwahaha!
so anyways i’ll be looking out for more of your stuff, maybe even some good laughs too XD.
i’m also known as meowkittykitty85 at deviantart if you wanna check out my craptastic fanart ;P
peace!
April 22nd, 2008 at 8:37 pm
You brought up the Ta Min and Roku thing during this podcast, how Ta Min looks like Katara. I’m not sure if I missed this or not. But Roku is not only related to Aang, but Zuko as well. So I think it’s sort of a sign like that, between the love- the foreshadowing of the competition. That could be just me. But that’s how I took it.
By the way, I love you guys, always cheer a Zutarian Spirit up.
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Oh wow, my first comment on your wonderful podcasts. Lovely things to help deal with AWS, especially after the lovely season three finale trailer.
Anyway, I wanted to disagree with something that was said in the podcast. You kind of glossed over Nightmares and Daydreams, stating that it wasn’t really significant in the Kataang/Zutara arguments. In terms of actual moments that you were arguing against, yes, it’s not that important because it does take place in Aang’s head.
However, I believe it’s a VERY important proof point on how reality can differ so much from fantasy. Looking at the screen caps, when Aang kisses Katara she’s surprised, then grins and leans in and kisses him herself for quite a while. He then goes into a dipping kiss move . . . just as Katara snaps him out of his daydream. As we all know, this is Aang’s fantasy, and what he really wants to happen.
But reality is much harsher, as Day of the Black Sun showed us. When he gets the guts to grab her and kiss her, she doesn’t even TOUCH him. Her hands are kind of up and stiff, like she’s trying to decide if she’s going to grab his arms and push him away or let them fall and hang at her sides. And instead of smiling at him when he pulls away, she looks away to the side with what I read to be a rather guilty and sad expression. Very different from the fantasy that Aang had in his head, only he’s leaving so he can’t really notice or pay close attention.
Then, of course, there’s her reaction in the trailer, which I won’t go into here because it’s a spoiler. But that’s EXTREMELY different from her reaction in his fantasy, and they’re in their Fire Nation clothing, too, which makes me feel like NAD is a foil for DOB and whatever episode that particular scene takes place.
Finally, I have a request. Do you think it would be possible to put up links somewhere to all the wonderful fanart you guys keep talking about? I was looking for that OmaShu one that you mentioned in this podcast, and I can’t find it. I’d love to see some of the works you talk about.
Looking forward to the next podcast, thanks guys! Oh, I”m also extremely amused by how much Farah dislikes Aang. A lot of her comments reminds me of me when I’m griping about kids. ^^
Keeping the hope alive!
May 10th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
As annoying as those Spazzes are, Woooooow. Wow.
This is the first of these that I’ve listened to. Excellent. Seriously.
So many things I didn’t notice… The possibility of Toph dying is.. wow. I can’t believe I didn’t see… I need to hear all of these podcasts.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:46 am
This is no proof at all. Zutara is a dream that will never come true in canon. Get a life, a real one, instead of making these dumb things which you think are signes. Damn you are all pathetic.
May 29th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Hey, hardcore Zutarian here! I’ve always loved looking deep into the development of Zutara and why it make so much more sense than Kataang, which is why I love listening to your conversations! You take the words right out of my mouth on some things, and also point out things I hadn’t noticed before! I love it!
Anyway, I will stop before I rant because I have a tendency to do that sometimes. I do have a question, though. What is that cave of two lovers picture you were talking about toward the beginning of the conversation? You said it was Daveshen or something, but I can’t find it on Deviantart. I tried several spellings, searching through omashu cave of two lovers art, but nothing. I hope it wasn’t taken down, because I REALLY want to see it! It sounds like such a brilliant piece of art and really funny, yet very true. Please send me link!
